Empowering Researchers
As a child, I held an awe-inspiring image of scientists—intellectuals from another world, experts in every field, masters of knowledge who could solve any problem with ease. This perception was undoubtedly shaped by the sci-fi movies I devoured and the stories I read, where scientists always had the answer, and where their labs were portals to futuristic discoveries.
However, reality turned out to be different. I was struck by harsh realities when I started my PhD journey nearly two decades ago in one of India’s most prestigious chemical labs. My expectations weren’t entirely unrealistic, yet I found myself disillusioned by the real-world scientific community. Many scientists I encountered were ordinary, flawed individuals, some even lacking the scientific temperament I had thought intrinsic to the profession. Bragging often seemed to overshadow genuine scientific curiosity.
With due respect to my Ph.D. supervisor, I admit that they were also more ‘worldly’ than my initial expectations - this added further layers of complexity to my Ph.D. journey. I was lucky enough to have an overall great supervisor. There were nearly fifty Ph.D. scholars in the institute at the time. Everyone was facing numerous challenges—personal, financial, professional, and systemic. Some of my batchmates, unable to cope, even dropped out.
These struggles weren't just limited to us. Looking back, even after more than a decade since completing my PhD, I see that while some things have improved—like lab infrastructures and digital support systems—the core work culture across many institutions remains stagnant. The same unnecessary hurdles continue to plague students, severely affecting their ability to focus on research and produce meaningful work.
This blog is born out of a desire to support research students navigate the complex and frustrating world of academic research. Through shared experiences, advice, and practical solutions, we hope this space will serve as a guide for those facing the same challenges. Whether you're at the beginning of your research journey or already deep into it, this blog is for you.
